According to survivor testimony, the band played on as the Titanic sank and the musicians went down in folklore as heroes. This book tells the story of John Hume, the youngest band member. Beginning before the disaster with the circumstances that put him on board, it follows the story through the sinking to the ensuing court battles.

When you first hear about the Titanic, what do you initially think of? Certainly one of the things a lot of people don't think of, is the musicians who went down with the ship. I confess, as much of a lover as I am of the Titanic, I knew next to nothing about the musicians, apart from the bandmaster was called Wallace Hartley. So it was interesting in a sense to read this book, about the violinist, John Hume (commonly misspelt on Titanic memorials as John Hulme) by his great niece, Yvonne Hume. He was only 21 when he went down with the Titanic, and left behind a grieving family and fiancee, and an unborn child. It's a book full of information, but for any Titanic buffs, there is nothing 'new' regarding the Titanic here. John was from Dumfries in Scotland, although his illegitimate daughter eventually cut all ties with Scotland in later life. There are a lot of illustrations and photographs of Dumfries then and now, along with photos of John and various other family members. Yvonne thoughtfully included biographies of the other band members - which will lead to you finding out that despite all of them going down with the ship, one was regarded as a "deserter" by the French army in the First World War, and was not formally declared dead until 2000! There are also photographs towards the back of the book of the Titanic memorials around the world, as well as an aged photograph of the Titanic section in Fairview Cemetery.
There is a foreword included by Millvina Dean, who was only a baby when the Titanic went down. Yvonne had the honour of meeting her before she died, and there is a photo, as well as biography, about Millvina in the last chapter.
This is a quick read, at 112 pages, but not the best Titanic book I've read. But it is the best book about one of the lesser known unfortunates.
