This Guide is meant to help emerging filmmakers be aware of what is involved in Developing a Script, Pre-Production, Production, Post Production, and Distribution & Marketing.
Through the years and over many productions, I have picked up numerous tips, tricks and things to look out for when producing projects with high production value. Most of these things can be learned through trial and error, but that will cost a lot of time and money. I wrote this guide so you could learn from my experiences and get better films made without some of those costly mistakes.
Since starting Indie Film NYC, my goal has been to help filmmakers past some of that learning curve most filmmakers go through. Until now, we have been doing this by sharing the experiences of the seasoned filmmakers through the podcast. I wanted to expand on this by sharing some of the most helpful information I have gained through my personal experience in the industry.
Over my 20 year career, I have been on million dollar commercials with big name directors, indie features with modest budgets, music videos, television shows, commercials for both network and cable channels, and one time I even worked on a corporate video for a donut filling machine [and somehow made it watchable!]. With each and every production, I learned something I could use to help make the next project better.
When I set out to write this guide, my initial thought was that I would write a five to ten page guide with broad strokes about what one should do to produce a film. The more that I worked on the outline, the more this guide expanded into what it is now. The greatest thing to understand is that, to make a solid film that you will be proud to show people, it will take planning and attention to detail. Even though there are numerous things that may be side-stepped once you actually get to your film project, being prepared and aware of possible difficulties can help limit the number of mistakes on your film.
